Moss Brook Growers - Glazebury

Glazebury is a 21-acre food-growing site that has been purchased by Unicorn Grocery, using money raised from supporters and customers.

The site is being leased by Unicorn to Moss Brook Growers which is a separate legal entity but the growers managing the site are also part of the Unicorn workers' co-op so there is a very direct connection between the two organisations both in terms of land and people.

Produce from the site will primarily be sold through Unicorn as well as other Manchester outlets, including the co-operative organic wholesaler, Organic North. The impetus for the project was Unicorn's desire to increase long-term security of supply and on-call availability of local produce to meet demand.

The project provides the opportunity to explore how a retail outlet can drive the creation of a new sort of relationship between growing, wholesale and retail. It is this aspect of the project which made it of particular interest to the Making Local Food Work programme through which it is receiving funding until September 2011.

Glazebury's first leek harvest

Trial crops of garlic and leeks were planted in 2009 and were doing well before the snow and ice that hit Britain in December and January 2010. Despite this however, some leeks were still harvested and provided Unicorn customers with supply which was not available from any other source because of the weather.
