Regional Good Food, Good Governance Training Events 2012

Co-operatives UK, as part of the Making Local Food Work programme, is offering free Good Food, Good Governance Simply Legal and Simply Governance workshops until March 2012.

Simply Legal

The training workshop is suitable for the following: those advising, working with or participating in any community enterprise or co-operative organisation.  It particularly focuses on the choice of legal and organisational structure.

The morning session uses presentation and case studies as a catalyst for group discussion and concentrates on: 

• Incorporation - What, Why and When?
• The different legal forms used by community food enterprises:
  • Unincorporated associations.
  • Companies.
  • Community Interest Companies.
  • Societies.
• The different organisational types used by community food enterprises:
  • Co-operatives.
  • Social Enterprise.
  • Community enterprise.
  • Voluntary groups.

The afternoon session reinforces the morning session with a practical workshop in which the participants choose the most appropriate legal form and organisational type for a community food enterprise.  This is done using:

• a paper-based select-a-structure exercise; and a
• web-based select-a-structure tool - newly revamped for this course.

Participants will also receive a copy of Simply Legal, Co-operative UK's comprehensive guide to the legal and organisational structures of third sector organisations.

Simply Governance

The training workshop is suitable for the following: those advising, working with or participating in any community enterprise or co-operative organisational structure.  It is particularly aimed at anyone serving on the governing body of a community food enterprise.

The morning session uses group work to explore:

• What is governance and why is it important?
• The typical governance problems of a community enterprise.
• Solutions and strategies to avoid the typical governance problems.

The afternoon session is a practical hands-on workshop in which the participants assess the governance health of a community food enterprise (either their own or someone else's).  This is carried out in two ways:

• a paper-based Governance audit, which is fed back to the group; and input into
• a web-based Governance Audit tool - newly created for this course and available to participants and their organisations after the course.

Participants will also receive a copy of Simply Governance, Co-operative UK's comprehensive guide to the systems and processes concerned with the effective running of a community or
co-operative enterprise.

For both courses, there is much that is applicable to any community or co-operative enterprise.

Our workshops are full days - from 10am to 4pm with lunch provided - and are free of charge if you are part of, associated to, or assisting with the development of a community food enterprise. A charge of £50 plus VAT will apply to other individuals wishing to attend.

There is a high demand for workshops, therefore, if you book a place and do not attend (without giving at least 48 hours) you will be charged a cancellation fee of £50 per person to cover food and administrative costs.
