Community farms offer bright future - our letter featured in the Farmers Weekly this week

Adam Bedford’s column (Opinion 14 May), acknowledges the growth of community supported agriculture within the UK.

Community supported agriculture, where communities/individuals buy into a farm, has incredible potential to address a range of issues affecting farming today.  It could bring more land into productive use and provide a way in for younger people with a long term interest in farming.

It also provides opportunities for farmers to work with members of their local community to farm areas of their land for mutual benefit, or to be employed directly by community groups to grow food.  And it reduces the risks by sharing these between the producer and consumer members.

Increasingly, consumers want to know more about their food – how it is produced and who produces it – and Making Local Food Work has found that offering support to community supported agriculture is a great way of achieving this.

Farmers have the opportunity to create direct links with their local community and this has a number of benefits for both – after all, producers and consumers are the two most important people in the food supply chain.
