New Defra Minister Praises Farmers' Markets

Newly - appointed Minister for Food, Farming and Environment, Jim Fitzpatrick recently spoke out in favour of farmers' markets.

Addressing the World Union of Wholesale Markets conference on 26th June, Mr Fitzpatrick stated that retail markets produced a ripple effect of benefit to other local businesses and created jobs. He noted that farmers' markets, in particular, were suited to meeting public demand for greater transparency over origin and production of their food, as well as providing sustainably-produced, seasonal food at reasonable prices. He concluded that, as Food Minister, he would be looking to do what he could to promote them.
