Making Local Food Work is not a grant-giving programme. It offers advice and guidance to existing or planned community food enterprises free of charge.

The Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts is leading a Local Food grants scheme as part of Changing Spaces, the same Big Lottery Fund programme that funds Making Local Food Work. This scheme awards grants of different sizes to community-led food initiatives. For more information, vist the Local Food programme website.

Your local council’s Community Development Officer will know about small grants for local schemes which your project may be eligible for. They should also have access to national directories of grant making trusts and other funding databases such as Grant Finder and Grant Net.

The Big Lottery Fund is currently inviting community enterprises to apply for funding of between £10,000 and £30,000 through its Village SOS programme. For more information visit

It is also possible to raise capital through Community Ownership models, which include issuing Community Shares, so local people can buy a stake in the enterprise. Find out more at
